47 MILLER / NOVEMBER 2018 NEWS Turkish milling sector has lost its doyen Noyan Galip Erik (86), a doyen of Turkish milling in- dustry, died. He had contributed a lot for development of the sector. Noyan Galip, who was a well-known ‘di- agram developer’ was buried at the cemetery of Hey- beliada, one of the Prince Islands near Istanbul after funeral prayer at Bezm-i Alem Valide Sultan Mosque. Noyan Galip Erik was a prominent figure for Tur- kish milling industry. He was also a member of advisoy board of the Miller Magazine and had made valuable contributions with his pieces and ideas for us. Noyan Galip Erik was born in Ankara in 1932. He brought Tur- kish milling sector engineering discipline with help of his studies at prestigious European universities. He es- tablished flour factories for Turkish food conglomerates like Ulker and Eti. Erik attended Talas American College and Tarsus American College. After compulsory mili- tary service, he received a scholarship from Is Bank and attended one of the most prestigious milling centers of the world, German Milling School in 1952. After be- ing graduated from Mill Construction department, he went to Russia and received his post-graduate degree for ‘diagram and project design’ at Moscow Institute for Milling in 1958. He created diagrams and projects for various flour mills. In 1971, he attended a Business Administration Program at Harvard University. He gave lectures at Cranfield Technology Institute in the UK. Noyan Galip Erik returned to Turkey in 1975 and continued to work for Turkish milling industry for two decades. He worked on diagram and design projects for 88 flour mills. Eti Biskuvi, Ulker, Ankara Un, Arsla- noglu Un, Ova Un, Filiz Makarna, and Oba Makarna plants are among factories he designed. The next deca- de saw Erik giving technical advisory for various milling companies. Despite his advancing age, he continued to closely follow innovations in the milling industry and introduced those innovations to Turkish industrialists. 30 articles of Erik was published in international maga- zines including the Miller Magazine. Erik also appeared at international congresses to share his experiences. Noyan Erik obtained two patents, one of them is in- ternational. He designed a system to cool down inter- nal-powered roller balls with pressured air and to use roller balls with current roller boards. ALİ ÖZPOLAT: MR. NOYAN MOVED THE INDUSTRY FORWARD Ali Özpolat, CEO of Özpolat Machinery attended the funeral ceremony at Besiktas district of Istanbul. Ozpolat had worked with Erik on many projects. He eulogized Erik who was a great figure for the sector: “Mr. Noyan served the milling industry for many years and as an engineer he made great contributions for the sector. Now we are mourning and his death is a source of deep sadness for us. He was a successful engineer and a beautiful human. He was hardworking and he had passion for his profession. He carried the milling industry forward with his projects. He was a pioneer in the sector to base diagrams and project designs on engineering point of view. Before him, project designs were being based on craftsmanship point of view. He was the one who had pointed out latest developments in the industry and details of technical issues which had not been noticed before. Hr was one of doyens of the sector. May he rest in peace.” Turkish millers mourn one of its doyens who had made huge contributions for the sector to become powerful enough for global com- petitiveness. Noyan Galip Erik who had done his fair share to establish factories which pro- duce several popular wheat-based products passed away at the age of 86.
