Miller Magazine Issue: 136 April 2021
The Covid-19 nightmare continues to upset the balances of the world. Governments continue to increase their wheat stocks for avoiding any possible shortage in food sup- ply due to the pandemic that is not known when to end. The export prices cause worry while there is no decrease in demand despite the high taxes imposed by wheat export- ing countries because of the increasing panic. According to the FAO Grain Price Index, wheat export prices remained 19.5 percent higher than the same month of the last year, despite the decrease in March. Turkey, too, is taking several measures to protect stocks in order to avoid a possible shortage in the food supply. The Government decided to restrict pasta export until April 30 to protect the wheat stock and is importing wheat through tenders. On the other hand, the sufficiency levels of herbal products in selected crops for 2019- 2020 announced by the Turkey Statistics Institute (TURKSTAT) are striking. Accordingly, the sufficiency level of wheat, which has the largest share in grain production in the 2019- 2020 season, remained at 89.5 percent, no grain has exceeded 100 percent. The sufficiency level for overall grains has been calculated as 87.8% for the 2019- 2020 season. The sufficiency level of wheat, which has the largest share in total grain production, was 89.5%. The sufficiency level of barley, which constitutes the most signif- icant inputs of the feed industry, was 94.8%, the sufficiency level of corn was 75.5%, and the sufficiency level of soy was 4.7%. When we look at the sub-branches of wheat, we come across striking figures in terms of sufficiency level. We see that the domestic production of bread wheat cannot meet the domestic demand completely, with the sufficiency level at 82.8 percent. As for durum wheat, domestic production is at promising levels in terms of meeting the domestic demand with 150.4 percent. However, since Turkey has a significant share in the world pasta export, it still has to import wheat. To go on with TURKSTAT's figures, we see that a total of 33 million 401 thousand 704 tons of grain was produced in the market year covering the period between 01 June 2019 and 31 May 2020. In the same period, the total wheat production was 19 million tons. 3 million 150 thousand tons of this is durum wheat, also known as pasta wheat, whereas bread and coarse wheat production remained at 15 million 850 thousand tons. According to TurkStat data, 28 million 748 thousand tons of wheat was presented to the market in the same period in Turkey. 10 million 793 thousand tons of this originates from imports and 957 thousand tons from 28 EU countries. The per capita consumption in the country has increased to 192.8 kilograms. 175.4 kilograms of this come from bread wheat whereas the remaining 17.4 kilograms come from durum wheat. editor Namık Kemal PARLAK millermagazine company/millermagazine millermagazine Parantez Publishing and Congress Ltd.
