During the coronavirus pandemic, many major grain exporters coun- tries have stopped or restricted their foreign sales to guarantee their people’s food safety. Countries dependent on imports tried to make large purchases in panic. In this process where the food supply chain has come to a breaking point, it has been understood how vital grain storage capacities are. Globally, we lose one-fifth of the projected wheat yield annually to pests and pathogens totaling losses of 209 million tonnes, worth $31 billion. The climate emergency has the capacity to bring further dis- ruption to global food supplies, as a changing environment brings new types of pests and diseases and increases their spread. Up to 40% of global crop production is lost to plant pests and diseases, says the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization. Each year, plant diseases cost the global economy more than $220 billion, and invasive insects cost at least $70 billion. From the harvest onward, the grain undergoes a series of opera- tions during the course of which quantitative and qualitative losses can occur. Insufficient drying and poor storage conditions can bring about losses caused by the combined action of moulds, insects, rodents and other pests. Given the increasing food demand of an increasing pop- ulation, reducing the postharvest loss is of high importance for global food security. Storage facilities, handling systems, and atmospheric conditions can significantly affect the quality and value of the grain. Artificial intelli- gence and machine learning methodologies could be applied to the grain storage industry and transform the way that managers interact with the silo, receive information on grain condition. They could im- prove the accuracy and efficiency of the existing grain management tools but also create new innovative ones. Grains are the main staple food in most of nations and account for the maximum postharvest losses on a calorific basis among all agricultural commodities. With safe storage, proper grain handling, we can reduce post-harvest losses. Safe storage for grains is possible with a good pre-cleaning, temperature tracking and with the right cooling-condi- tioning equipment. In this issue, we have chosen this vital topic as the cover story. We tried to inform you about the latest developments in safe grain storage. I hope you will read with interest the articles on the trending technolo- gies of the world's leading silo manufacturers. editor Namık Kemal PARLAK millermagazine company/millermagazine millermagazine Parantez Publishing and Congress Ltd.
