Miller Magazine Issue: 156 December 2022
The pages of that thick calendar which we hung on the wall at the be- ginning of the year as if it would ‘never end’ have a few pages left. The shadow of the New Year fell on us. It is time to say goodbye to 2022. This year, everyone has both painful and sweet moments. Now it is time to wel- come the new year with great energy and enthusiasm. A new page of our life is to be written. On the one hand, we are reviewing 2022, on the other hand, new year planning is going on. Because the new year symbolizes new beginnings, new hopes, and new expectations. Like everyone else, the representatives of the milling industry are putting forth their expectations to move their business further, and they are mak- ing plans to realize these expectations. Of course, it is necessary to enter into realistic expectations and visionary planning at a time when there are political uncertainties, economic fluctuations, and dazzling technological advances. Otherwise, representatives of this industry who are playing a vital role in feeding the world population may get into a difficult situation. While the consequences of the global contractions that started with the Covid-19 pandemic continue, the war between the two grain giants, Russia and Ukraine, increased geopolitical risks for the food and milling industry. Rising wheat prices and varying market availability have hit the milling in- dustry hard. In the last issue of the year, we devoted our cover to the world flour mar- ket. Global wheat flour trade in the 2022/23 season is forecast to contract by around 2% year-over-year, to 13.9 million tonnes, according to a new report released by International Grains Council (IGC) on 17th November 2022. “The projected annual decline chiefly reflects smaller envisaged purchases by the CIS, South America and sub-Saharan Africa, with de- liveries to the latter region seen at the lowest level in twelve years,” says Alexander Karavaytsev, a senior economist at the IGC. Politics and weather invariably remain the main focus in the grain mar- kets and impact the trading sentiment. “Center stage today is played out between the immediate availability of Black Sea wheat as well as the out- look for the months to come due to its impact on the world S&D,” points out Natalja Skuratovic, Senior Sales Manager CIS at CESCO EPC, in her article for Miller Magazine. By putting our heads together with our editorial team at the end of this year, we are seeking for creating a more trustworthy and beneficial mag- azine. Hope to meet you with well-prepared new issues in the new year... editor Namık Kemal PARLAK Global wheat flour market millermagazine company/millermagazine millermagazine Parantez Publishing and Congress Ltd.
